Often compared to megapixel resolution in digital photography or thread count in fine Egyptian linen, knot density directly influences motif clarity, structural longevity, and long-term valuation.

How KPSI Is Calculated

To calculate KPSI, master weavers count the vertical knots (warps) and horizontal knots (wefts) within a single square inch on the reverse side of the rug. Multiplying these two values yields the final knot density count:

"A carpet with 30 knots horizontally and 30 knots vertically yields a knot density of 900 KPSI — an achievement attainable only by master artisans working with pure mulberry silk over several years."

• 150 – 300 KPSI: Tribal & Nomadic weaves (Bakhtiari, Hamadan). Geometric motif foundations.
